Prolific Spokane architect passes away

Warren Heylman (1923-2022).

Warren Heylman, an architect from Spokane who practiced in the area for over 50 years, passed away at the age of 93 earlier this month.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Heylman opened his at-the-time one-man practice in Spokane in 1952. The firm still exists today as Heylman Martin Architects under the leadership of Heylman's daughter Ann H. Martin.

Throughout his career Heylman designed several large and important projects in his hometown. These include the original Spokane Airport which he designed with fellow architect William H. Trogdon in 1965. As reported by The Spokesman-Review, he was also responsible for more than 1,000 units of affordable housing for the elderly throughout the region. In November 2021, his Riverfalls Tower Apartments project, built in 1972, was added to the Spokane Register of Historic Places.
