Longtime Seattle architect passes away

Allwine

Longtime Seattle Architect, Greg Allwine, passed away Jan. 16 at the age of 71.

Allwine headed local architecture firm Johnson Braund, Inc. for over 46 years. The firm is known for hotel and multi-family projects across the country. Examples of local projects are the Hyatt House Hotel across from Seattle Center, Jade Residences in Kirkland, Tukwila Village affordable housing, and the AC Hotel on Yale Ave N., which is currently under construction.

Allwine received a B. Arch from Washington State University in 1975. In 1977 he teamed up with Tom Johnson and Larry Braund to start Johnson Braund Design Group P.S., Inc. The firm initially worked on multi-family projects in the greater Seattle area, but gradually expanded to include a variety of project types and other design disciplines. In the 1980's, hotel design was added as a specialty.

Allwine oversaw the firm's growth from a local focus to national projects, including a branch office in Nashville. In recent years, firm principals Jeff Williams, Eli Tuttle, and Seth Terry have taken over firm management while Allwine focused on project review and details.

Over his long career, Allwine's influence touched many, and his legacy remains in those people and projects that continue to develop and shape the world. Those who knew Allwine immediately recognized his passion for project management, mentoring, and providing opportunity.

Allwine had a career-long devotion to solving the challenges of physical disability and accessibility. To carry on and support those goals, the endowed Greg L. Allwine Scholarship in Architecture has been established at Washington State University. Priority in awarding the scholarship is given to individuals with a mobility impairment or physical disability. Recipients will also be given the opportunity for an internship with Johnson Braund.
