On Monday, King County announced that its latest Health Through Housing property, a newly built building at 1010 E. Republican St. on Capitol Hill, is expected to open and start welcoming residents this fall.
The county purchased the property from Prescott Building LLC in March for more than $11.4 million. The four-story development has 36 units. The county says 35 of these will be flipped to permanent supportive housing for the formerly homeless. The additional unit is likely to be used for staff offices.
The county also announced that the building will be jointly operated by Chief Seattle Club and Lavender Rights Project and will serve individuals from the queer, transgender, two-spirit, Black, and Indigenous communities, as well as people of color. The county did not disclose if the property will get a new name and/or address. The building is currently called Prescott after the previous owner.
The DJC broke the news of the sale Mar. 31. The purchase was made using blended funding from King County and the City of Seattle, including $6 million from repurposing of funds originally allocated for a jail. King County and the City of Seattle announced in 2021 the intention to reinvest $16 million in upstream community-based health and housing programs for communities that are disproportionately affected by the legal system and incarceration.
This is the 11th Health Through Housing property acquisition. The initiative aims to add up to 1,600 emergency housing and permanent supportive housing units for people experiencing or at risk of chronic homelessness.
As reported last month, architect SHW designed the latest HTH building for its original developer Noren Development. Prescott bought the property from Noren in March 2020 when construction had stalled and the project went into receivership. The price then was $5 million.
