City publishes new rule for URM retrofits

The alternate method for retrofits defines a minimally acceptable level of safety from collapse through interventions that include parapet bracing.

As part of its work toward creating a new mandatory retrofit ordinance for Seattle's 1,100 historic unreinforced masonry brick buildings (URMs), the city has published a Draft Director's Rule for URM retrofits for public comment. If implemented, the rule would formally allow for the use of what the city calls an “alternate method” for the seismic improvement of some URMs.
