Distinguished architect and board member at Mackenzie passes away

Pacific Northwest architecture and engineering design firm Mackenzie has announced the sudden passing of Terry Krause, a board member, senior leader, and architect with the firm. Krause passed away on July 27.

In an obituary mourning his passing, Mackenzie describes Krause as an exceptional architect and respected leader who leaves “behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped the architectural community and touched the lives of countless professionals in the industry.”

Mackenzie is headquartered in Portland and has two offices in Washington, one in Seattle and the other in Vancouver. Krause was based in Portland.

Krause, whose father was also a distinguished architect in the city of roses, was a principal architect at the firm, a compassionate mentor, and a driving force behind Mackenzie's business growth. He carried on a family legacy advancing designs that have graced the commercial, mixed-use, and retail real estate developments of the Pacific Northwest, leaving an indelible mark in the region.

Krause joined Mackenzie in 2006 with more than 20 years of experience working for clients such as Fred Meyer, Safeway, Nike and QFC. Under his leadership, the firm's retail architecture practice flourished, and his guidance through the decades played a pivotal role in shaping Mackenzie's direction.

“Terry Krause's contributions to our design practice were immeasurable,” Dietrich Wieland, president of Mackenzie, shared. “His dedication to excellence and passion for creating spaces that harmoniously blend aesthetics and functionality were incomparable. His influence extended beyond the boardroom; Terry mentored many aspiring professionals in their architecture and engineering careers, inspiring them to reach new heights.”

The obituary details Krause's impact beyond the projects he designed. He served as a prominent advocate for architecture education and licensing and he believed in nurturing talent and empowering colleagues, fostering a work culture that celebrates people's success without taking credit for himself.

The firm says his absence will be deeply felt not only within the walls of Mackenzie but across the entire architectural community, where he mentored many emerging architects to pass the professional board exam through his active engagement with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Portland chapter committee for Intern Development Program (IDP). Many from that program have since grown into leadership roles at Mackenzie as well as at architecture firms in the Pacific Northwest. For many years Krause also volunteered for the executive leadership team of AIA Portland, including serving as president and secretary.

“During this challenging time, the thoughts and prayers of the entire Mackenzie company go out to Terry's wife and family. His memory will forever remain in our hearts as we continue to honor his vision and uphold the legacy he left behind,” the firm writes.

A celebration of life for Terry Krause will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Ecotrust Building, 721 N.W Ninth Ave., Portland, OR 97209.
