Mass timber and the ‘missing middle'

Mass timber modules take shape at Mercer Mass Timber’s factory in Spokane. The company thinks this product is a great option for middle housing projects.

Mass timber building materials and solutions are literally on the rise in Seattle. Developers are increasingly choosing mass timber as the primary construction material for their high- and mid-rise multifamily projects. These range from market-rate projects like Akari House, a 12-story mass timber tower proposed for Capitol Hill, to Heartwood, the city's first tall mass timber affordable apartment building, which opened last fall at 1323 E. Union St.
