The Interdisciplinary Science Building at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham was recently certified LEED Gold.
The four-story STEM building opened in spring 2022. It houses biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and ecology teaching labs, as well as support spaces and active learning areas for the WWU community.
A new connector bridge links the building to the neighboring Biology Building.
Perkins&Will designed the academic facility. It was built by BNBuilders.
The LEED Gold certification was achieved via a series of sustainable design approaches that included the optimization of energy and water usage; the reduction of light pollution through dark night and low foot-candle lighting; and the addition of electric vehicle charging stations at the building's parking lot.
WWU says around 85% of the project's construction waste was diverted from landfills.
