Colliers Engineering & Design is looking to MG2’s office in downtown Seattle to serve as an anchor on the West Coast for the newly combined firms.

Colliers on Monday announced a new partnership with Seattle-based architecture and design firm MG2 Corporation.

MG2 is joining with Colliers Engineering & Design, a division of the global commercial real estate and investment management firm.

MG2 will be rebranded as Colliers Engineering & Design at a future date and the firm's senior leadership team will become shareholders in the new combined business, playing a key role in its leadership going forward.

Transaction terms have not been disclosed. Matheson Financial Advisors acted as financial advisor to MG2.

MG2’s roots date to 1971 when Doug Mulvanny founded Mulvanny Architects. In 1999, Mulvanny Architects merged with G2 Architecture to create MulvannyG2. MulvannyG2 rebranded as MG2 in 2015 and that year also moved its headquarters from Bellevue to 1101 Second Ave. in downtown Seattle, where it is still located. Today, the firm employs over 400 professionals across seven offices in the U.S. and China. MG2 specializes in the retail, industrial, mixed-use, residential, food and beverage, and hospitality sectors. Services include architecture, design, strategic planning and program management.

Colliers Engineering & Design is a multi-disciplinary engineering, architecture, design and consulting firm headquartered in Holmdel, New Jersey. The privately held company has over 75 offices throughout the U.S., but until now has not had a base in Seattle.

The integration of the two firms creates a national platform with more than 3,000 employees across the U.S.

MG2 moved its headquarters from Bellevue to downtown Seattle in 2015.

MG2's CEO and chairman Mitch Smith told the DJC that “Colliers is looking to MG2 to serve as an anchor on the West Coast.” Following the merger, Smith said MG2's Seattle office will continue to operate as it has been but with expanded resources. The office occupies around 64,000 square feet on three floors of a four-story building. MG2 has a 15-year lease for the space which if not renewed would end in 2030.

“Partnering with a complementary professional practice enables us to immediately grow the firm with the right resources and expertise to keep pace with our clients' accelerated growth, diversify our markets, and achieve our strategic vision,” Smith added. The partnership also allows MG2 to expand its geographic reach and add expertise in building systems and structural engineering, site development, civil engineering and construction management.

MG2 has worked with Colliers Engineering & Design in the past. “The firms have a similar culture that takes care of their employees as a priority,” Smith said.

In a press release, Kevin L. Haney, president and CEO of Colliers Engineering & Design, said the addition of MG2 will elevate the firm's “architectural, design and program management capabilities, creating a national platform that enhances our current services and accelerates our growth trajectory.”

“With over 3,000 employees across the U.S., we now have enhanced consulting and design capabilities in every major region, allowing us to serve clients more effectively and create additional opportunities for our people,” he said.
