A Seattle holiday favorite is open again at the Sheraton Grand Seattle to help make the season bright and help those with type 1 diabetes. The event's perennial beneficiary is Breakthrough T1D Research, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is “Accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications.” Formerly JDRF, the organization was founded in 1970.

The Sheraton at 1400 Sixth Ave. hosts the display through Jan 1. Open hours are Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., extended to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

People can vote for their favorite displays and donate to Breakthrough T1D Research through onsite display QR codes. For online voting and donations see: https://tinyurl.com/GngrbrdT1D2025

This year's gingerbread display theme is “Toy Shop Time Machine,” and as always, local architecture firms designed and created the displays. These architects team with Sheraton chefs and with selected “elves,” local children living with type 1 diabetes. Together they build 6-foot-tall gingerbread creations. Although the elves for the event are all children, T1D strikes both children and adults at any age and suddenly.
