AIA Project of the Month: Mixing in the middle

  • For Mount Baker Middle School and its neighbors, the whole campus is much more than the sum of its parts.

    Exposed structure and clerestory windows make the library a place of comfort and pride.
    Graduating from grade school and enrolling in middle school is a big step for students, and a total change in location. But at one Mount Vernon grade school, the future is just a short walk. On their way to Mount Baker Middle School, new students pass through a mall-like center where their parents and neighbors gather for meetings and social events, and where they will continue to use the library and eat lunch.

    "It takes them all of five minutes to find their way around," said architect David Hall of The Henry Klein Partnership.
