For nearly a century, bigger equaled better for Swedish Medical Center. Since 1910, it has grown from a 24-bed renovated apartment building to a sprawling 13-block colossus on Seattle's First Hill. But by the early 1990s, its size had started to create almost as many problems as it solved.
