Historical society spotlights Capitol Hill's mid-century modern architecture

The Capitol Hill Historical Society (CHHS) has been conducting a survey of mid-century modern multi-family architecture in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Due to be released next month, it will reveal a rich fabric of mid-century modern buildings. The survey was a joint venture led by Capitol Hill Historical Society President Tom Heuser and Lana Blinderman a photographer and photo-based artist working in the architectural documentary genre. The project is funded with a $10,000 King County 4Culture grant.

In total, the project has recorded 254 extant and 12 demolished mid-century modern properties dating from 1945-1978. There are also three properties that have been significantly remodeled to appear Mid-Century. The society wanted to record and reappraise the value of this architectural style in the neighborhood, which both Heuser and Blinderman argue is often under-appreciated and overlooked, especially its expression through multi-family design.
