Nichols Brothers Boat Builders of Freeland has been selected to build a 360-foot stern-wheeler for Seattle's American West Steamboat. The new stern-wheeler will be called the Empress of the North and accommodate 236 overnight guests and 84 crew members. It will be utilized for seasonal cruises in Southeast Alaska and on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Guido Perla & Associates of Seattle will design the vessel. The design will be based on American West's Queen of the West stern-wheeler which was built by Nichols Bros. and placed in service in 1995. The new project is expected to cost $50 million and be completed by May 2003.
