University of Washington

James Severson, current president of the Cornell Research Foundation, has been named vice provost for intellectual property and technology transfer at the University of Washington, starting Jan. 1, 2003. The UW's Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer includes a unit that develops, markets, protects and licenses inventions that arise from the school's $800 million-a-year research activities. Severson will be building the "second generation" technology transfer models and act as a liaison with private industry and government officials locally, nationally and internationally. He was in charge of technology transfer from Cornell's Ithaca campus and the Weill Medical College of Cornell in New York City, and before that worked for the Office of Patents & Technology Marketing at the University of Minnesota.

The American Accounting Association named Terry Shevlin editor of The Accounting Review. Shevlin is a professor in the UW Business School and is noted for his research on executive and employee stock option compensation. He will head the national journal until 2005.
