Alan Gallay, a professor at Western Washington University professor has won the Bancroft Prize for his book on the history of slave trade among Native Americans in the South. Gallay has taught at Western since 1988. The Bancroft includes a grant of $4,000 and has been presented by the trustees of Columbia University since 1948 to authors of American history books of exceptional merit and distinction.
