PORTLAND (AP) — The Oregon heart surgeon who pioneered heart valve replacements is returning to his roots at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. The Oregonian reports that Dr. Albert Starr is going to be a special adviser at OHSU, where he began his work on prosthetic heart valves more than 50 years ago. The heart valve that Starr helped invent has been used to treat more than 175,000 patients. The 85-year-old Starr says he now hopes to focus on developing pumps to combat congestive heart failure.
