Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit announced the appointment of Michael Filipovic as the new federal public defender for the Western District of Washington.
Filipovic assumed the post effective March 1, 2014, following the retirement of veteran Thomas W. Hillier, II. A swearing-in ceremony was held March 4, 2014, with Chief District Judge Marsha J. Pechman of the Western District presiding.
A native of Chicago, Filipovic received his B.A. in criminal justice administration from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1974 and his J.D. from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law, in 1977. In 2010, he was named Outstanding Assistant Federal Public Defender by the National Association of Federal Public Defenders.
