Alaska Supreme Court

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Supreme Court Justice Dana Fabe plans to retire next year.

Fabe, who was the first woman appointed to serve on the court and the first woman to serve as chief justice, intends to retire June 1. The Alaska court system released news of Fabe's planned retirement on Tuesday.

Fabe, who was appointed to the court in 1996, has served three terms as chief justice, the most recent ending this past June.

Fabe said she was giving early notice of her retirement because it can take months to fill a judicial vacancy, and she wants to have a smooth transition.
