Wildfire readiness is a development issue in Washington

Major wildfire events have reinforced the importance of integrating wildfire resilience into land-use planning and development review. This photo was taken in Wenatchee in 2024.

As development expands into wildfire-prone areas across Washington — the zone where residential, commercial, or other development meets or intermingles with undeveloped wildland vegetation (the “Wildland-Urban Interface” or “WUI”) — wildfire readiness is affecting project approvals, infrastructure planning, insurance availability, and ongoing risk management.
