Stock option changes could be a big mistake

  • While the overall number of option grants may be going down, compensation experts say that the big change is unlikely to be seen at the top, but instead at the lower ranks.

    NEW YORK -- A cynic might have trouble believing that anything in big business is as it seems anymore.

    Consider stock options, the popular pay incentives of the 1990s blamed for enticing top executives to cook the books at places like Enron, WorldCom and others.
