    NEW YORK — Breaking up may be hard to do, but not for some corporate marriages that may fare better after divorce.

    While a surge in takeovers has stolen the spotlight on Wall Street lately, not everyone is seeing the value of pairing up with someone else. In fact, some big companies — including American Express and Sara Lee — have announced plans to spin off units they feel could gain more by operating on their own.
