Which is easier to do, develop new systems or change attitudes? Calculate the maximum stress loads for a 7.0 earthquake or keep a client happy? Do the work yourself, or accurately communicate the client’s intent to a colleague? Develop a task schedule, or “sell” it to a skeptical project team? Questions like these vividly portray the hard facts about the soft side.
According to surveys with over 1,500 clients, guess which of the following was found to be the leading cause for poor project performance: a) technical incompetence; b) budget overruns; c) poor adherence to schedule; or d) communication breakdowns. Okay, no surprise. It’s communication.
