New shoring method meets site challenges

  • Contractors say the German technique saved $1 million and shaved a month off the construction schedule at Martin Selig's 635 Elliott office project.

    The cutter soil mix method involves advancing a series of cutting heads into the ground and mixing in cement and bentonite clay to form panel walls. After each panel is created, steel soldier piles are inserted for strength.

    CONTRACTORS on the 635 Elliott office project estimated they shaved off $1 million and a month of work using a shoring method that's new to the United States. They used the cutter soil mix method, which was developed in Germany and has only been used in a handful of projects here.
