Activist chained to excavator in protest at UW animal lab

SEATTLE (AP) — Two animal rights activists have climbed to the top of an excavator at a construction site to protest the building of an animal research facility.

KIRO-TV reports the activists have attempted to block construction at the University of Washington site since Monday morning.

One of the protesters locked himself to the hydraulic lift and hung a banner reading, “You will not build this lab.”

Activists say the protest is part of an ongoing international effort to prevent the construction of the Animal Research and Care Facility.

A news release from the activists says the facility will increase the number of animals the university can use and kill in research by thousands.

The campaign is pressuring the UW, construction manager Skanska USA, and excavation subcontractor Northwest Construction to stop all plans to continue building the facility.
