Work on the $330 million Elliott Bay Seawall is taking a break so that tourists can get to the central waterfront.

A temporary pedestrian promenade from University to Madison streets is opening and it will have information about the seawall project as well as activities and attractions nearby. About 70 new parking spaces are available adjacent to Waterfront Park.

Many businesses on piers 54, 55, 56 and 57 are reopening today — including Ivar's Acres of Clams, which underwent a $20 million down-to-the-studs renovation during the 273-day closure.

The new Ivar's has an expanded kitchen, more seating and a new outdoor patio along Elliott Bay. The adjoining Fish Bar was also renovated.

W.G. Clark Construction built the shell, core and restaurant for Ivar's. Mithun and CB Anderson Architects were the designers. Reid Middleton was structural engineer.

Before the restaurant renovation, Pacific Pile & Marine replaced 430 creosote-laden piles with 189 galvanized steel piles on Pier 54, which supports Ivar's.

Seawall construction will continue to the south — from Madison to Yesler streets — adjacent to Colman Dock. Work on the central section will resume in October from University to Madison streets, and construction will start on a new portion from Pike to Virginia streets.

Mortenson/Manson is the general contractor for the seawall.

City officials expect the seawall project to finish in June 2016.
