Phil Evans and his son Brendan won the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 regional qualifier last month and will travel to Las Vegas in February to compete in the contest's world championship.
The father-son team from R&D Masonry beat other teams from Keystone Masonry, J&S Masonry and Fairweather Masonry during the event at the Western Washington Masonry Trades JATC Training Center in Seattle. Phil was the bricklayer and Brendan was the mason tender.
In both the regional and championship events, each bricklayer works with a mason tender to build a 26-foot-long, double-wythe brick wall in an hour. The goal is to use 500 bricks.
Walls are judged by masonry experts for joint thickness, height, plumb, level and voids. Technical errors result in deductions from the total amount of brick installed in the wall. The team with the most bricks laid after any deductions wins the event.
In the regional event, Ben Griffin and Dennis Chesney with Keystone Masonry won second place, and Jacob Wood and Jake Borman, also with Keystone Masonry, won third place. Griffin also won the Craftsmanship Award.
In Las Vegas, team Evans will be competing for over $100,000 in cash and prizes, including a 2016 Ford F-250 4x4 pickup truck. The event is expected to attract more than 4,000 attendees as part of the World of Concrete/World of Masonry trade show.
