The Walsh Group recently won two big contracts for work at Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton: $107 million for structural and seismic upgrades to the ship maintenance facility; and $34 million for seismic work on the central fire station and improvements to two other buildings.
The 557,400-square-foot maintenance facility — called Building 431 — was built in 1933 and contains a large machine shop. It will be fortified with buckling-restraint braces in the high bay areas, and shoring will be installed in half of the building that has settled.
A big challenge on Building 431 will be relocating large industrial equipment to temporary work zones to keep the Navy operating during construction. Other work includes interior demolition, elevator retrofits, exterior restoration, restroom repairs, electrical modifications, fire safety, HVAC repairs and hazardous material remediation.
Work on Building 431 is expected to start next month and finish in June 2018.
Here is the project team: Fraser + Fogle Architects, KPFF (structural engineer), EHS-International (haz-mat), Notkin Mechanical Engineers, Sparling (electrical engineer), Aegis Engineering (fire protection), Lerch Bates (elevator consultant), Pinnacle Consulting Group (industrial engineer), Test Equipment Distributors (shielding consultant) and GeoEngineers (geotechnical engineer).
The 87,000-square-foot central fire station — Building 435 — will also get structural and living quarters upgrades, as well as renovations to offices, kitchen, cafeteria and restrooms. Additional remodels will be performed on buildings 460 and 850.
Temporary buildings for fire department and kitchen operations will be set up on nearby lots during construction.
Work on buildings 435, 460 and 850 is scheduled to start this month and finish in May 2017.
The team for Building 435 and related work is: Fraser + Fogle Architects, Reid Middleton (civil and structural engineer), Notkin Mechanical Engineers, Sparling (electrical engineer) and Clevenger Associates (kitchen equipment).
NAVFAC Northwest owns both projects.
