Crews from Rhine Demolition of Tacoma made quick work of a small piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, demolishing several bents in the structure's northbound on-ramp near the stadiums.
The job started Saturday and finished Monday. Rhine removed the eastern part of the ramp as a subcontractor to Scarsella Bros., the general contractor building a new intersection by the tunnel's south operations building. Removing the ramp will allow Scarsella to connect streets with the new intersection.
The western part of the ramp will be removed by a subcontractor to Kiewit, the design-build contractor in charge of removing the entire viaduct.
Today, Rhine expects to demobilize its equipment, consisting of two long-reach excavators and two bucket-and-thumb excavators.
A Rhine official said crews removed all the footings and foundations of the section. He said work went smoothly.
Rhine's team was led by superintendents Rick Lindquist and Shane Olson.
