TACOMA — The state Department of Ecology slapped a $1.9 million fine on Stericycle-Tacoma for a 2018 fire on the Tacoma tideflats and for compliance issues.
Ecology says Stericycle tried to empty several dozen drums of tetrazole — a hazardous powdered chemical used to inflate vehicle airbags — into a rail car instead of keeping the waste in the drums. As the waste was being processed, it ignited and caused the fire.
