$66,000 in grants for apprenticeships

OLYMPIA — The Washington State Department of Commerce said it awarded $65,683 in grants to bolster professional education and training programs aimed at getting more skilled workers into the construction, medical and aerospace industries.

The funds are matched two-to-one by the organizations that will develop, promote and implement the programs to help meet the need for skilled workers in target industries and communities. The programs should result in industry or state-recognized certificates, associate degrees, professional licenses or similar credentials.

Inland Northwest Associated General Contractors Head Start to the Construction Trades Apprenticeship received $30,000 as did Whatcom Community College for Substance Use Disorder Professional and Medical Assistant training programs. The Aerospace Machinists Institute got $5,683 for the Aerospace Skills Boot Camp.

Funding is from the Skilled Worker Awareness program created by the state Legislature in 2017.
