Huge jump in May for construction jobs; is that good news?

  • Job losses could return as temporary federal support programs end, and state and local officials deal with tighter budgets.

    CitizenM broke ground in February on its 216-room hotel at 60 Yesler Way in Pioneer Square, then the pandemic halted work. Crews returned recently to start site work.

    Employment data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the construction industry added 464,000 net new jobs in May, apparently surprising many economists. The news comes on the heels of a loss of 995,000 construction jobs in April and 65,000 in March.
