Big shift coming soon to I-5 southbound lanes in Tacoma

In the coming weeks, both directions of I-5 will be on their own bridges over the Puyallup River. HOV lanes will open this summer.

Both directions of traffic on Interstate 5 have been sharing a bridge over the Puyallup River in Tacoma for nearly three years. That will all change in the coming weeks as the state Department of Transportation says it will gradually move southbound traffic onto a new bridge over the river. Northbound traffic will continue to use the currently shared bridge, which is just a few years old and adjacent to the new southbound bridge.
