After a few years of setbacks, the University of Washington apparently is moving forward with its plan to build a replacement for Haggett Hall on its main Seattle campus.
The UW is now seeking a design-build team for the replacement dormitory. The school will use a two-part integrated design-build selection process, with the general contractor on board before an architect is picked. Design-build teams can include joint ventures. Statements of qualification are due Oct. 10.
The new dorm will have 800 student beds, lounge areas, a fitness center and parking.
An advertisement in the Sept. 12 DJC says the two-phase project will raze the existing Haggett Hall and design and build a replacement. The first phase will involve abatement and demolition, site restoration and the design of the new hall. The second phase will include permitting and construction. This phase will need approval by the UW Board of Regents, expected in September 2023.
The project budget is $165 million and the target price for the design-build contract is $115 million.
The DJC reported in September 2016 that the 730-bed Haggett Hall was to be demolished in the summer of 2018 and the new Haggett open in July 2020. Before that could happen, the UW made some budget cuts that put the replacement Haggett Hall into an undetermined future phase.
The Daily reported last year that Haggett was up for demolition at that time, but the UW decided to keep it open for the 2021-22 school year due to high demand for on-campus rooms.
A UW official said the designer-builder solicitation process will continue to February 2023. Demolition would start in June 2024, followed by excavation and shoring in October of that year. The new hall would be finished in August 2027.
