OLYMPIA— The state Department of Labor & Industries' Employment Standards Program is drafting rules on immigration-related coercion in the workplace.
This rulemaking is in response to Substitute Senate Bill 5104 that passed during the 2025 legislative session. The law allows employees to file complaints with L&I if they are experiencing coercion in the workplace related to their immigration status or a family member's status. It also directs L&I to investigate coercion complaints and sets penalty amounts for employers found in violation.
