Team tapped for region's first small modular reactors

  • The $2.5 billion project, officially dubbed the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility, will be the first in the region using SMRs.

    The project’s high-temperature gas-cooled small modular reactors are expected to produce 80 megawatts of electricity each.

    Public power joint operating agency Energy Northwest announced Thursday it was in negotiations with Cascade Nuclear Partners of Vancouver, Clark County, to plan, design and build the first four of 12 small modular reactors (SMR) near Richland, under a progressive design-build model.
