Everett's Edgewater Bridge project is moving along with the arrival and placing of the final two sets of girders this month.
This marks a significant and visible milestone for the bridge replacement project. The concrete girders are the main horizontal beams that support the bridge deck and traffic load.
This bridge replacement has crews working high above a 90-foot ravine replacing the 1946 bridge, a critical connector between Mukilteo and Everett. The contractor is Granite Construction of Everett, having been awarded an over $25 million contract in 2024. The estimated budget for the project is $34 million, funded with $6 million in local funds and $28 million from federal grants.
Once girders arrive onsite, crews use cranes to lift each girder off the truck and attach it to a custom-built sled and track, allowing the girders to be rolled slowly (about 3 feet per minute) into the bridge span. Each girder is then lifted off the sled and dropped into its final resting place using cranes on either side of the ravine.
After approximately 14 months since closing the bridge for construction, the Edgewater Bridge is getting its final two big pieces. Once completed, the bridge will provide modern seismic safety, 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, 6.5-foot sidewalks on each side of the bridge, and 5-foot bike lanes on each side between the sidewalk and the road.
The bridge is scheduled for completion in early 2026. For the DJC 2023 story on the bid and project onset, see https://tinyurl.com/EdgewaterBridge2023
