Spring projects bring renewed reminder to call 811 before digging

  • In 2025, 42% of the state's 2,705 reported underground utility damages occurred because someone dug without first requesting a locate.
  • As spring projects ramp up across Washington, state officials are reminding residents to take a simple but critical safety step before digging: call 811.

    To help spread the message, Gov. Bob Ferguson has proclaimed April as Safe Digging Month in Washington. The designation comes as warmer weather brings an uptick in home improvement, landscaping and construction projects — and with them, a higher risk of damaging buried utility lines.
