RICHLAND — The U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site has completed permanent disposal of its first batch of vitrified low-activity tank waste, marking a significant milestone in the long-running effort to clean up nuclear waste in Eastern Washington.
The stainless steel containers, filled with low-activity waste that has been vitrified into glass form, were produced at Hanford's Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant and placed into the onsite Integrated Disposal Facility. It is the first time waste has been permanently disposed of at the facility, a step officials say demonstrates progress toward steady-state Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste operations and long-term risk reduction.
