Rising energy, materials costs drive sharp increase in construction input prices

  • Energy-related inputs posted the steepest increases, with diesel prices up 73.8% from last year.
  • Construction inputs jumped sharply in April, driven by surging energy and materials prices that are increasingly squeezing contractors and project budgets, according to a new analysis from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

    The producer price index for inputs to new nonresidential construction rose 1.7% for the month and 6.6% compared to April 2025, significantly outpacing the 3.6% increase in bid prices contractors say they would charge to build a fixed set of buildings.
