Hanford completes 24th tank waste retrieval

Federal cleanup crews at the Hanford nuclear reservation have finished removing radioactive waste from yet another aging underground tank, marking the 24th such retrieval.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced last week that workers transferred roughly 79,000 gallons of waste from Single-Shell Tank A-106 to a newer double-shell tank over the past seven months. The process relied on a combination of water to dissolve hardened saltcake and recycled liquid waste to mobilize sludge — a technique Hanford last used nearly a decade ago.
