Ukrainian contractor finds opportunity in America

    For Igor Kunitsa, building a city hall in Sumner is nothing compared with building a life in a new country.

    Igor Kunitsa and his family immigrated to the United States from Dubno, Ukraine, in 1989. Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe on the north coast of the Black Sea.

    The 31-year-old Tacoma contractor emigrated with his father and the rest of their family from Ukraine in 1989, two years before it achieved independence from the Soviet Union. His father's construction business saw its prospects grind to a near halt as projects were increasingly doled out to communists. As Christians, the family felt compelled to leave.
