Portland's bridges influence city's development

    When it opened in 1913, the Broadway Bridge was the longest double-leaf bascule -- or counterweighted -- drawbridge in the world. The main span is 290 feet long and hangs 90 feet above the water. The original color is listed as "Golden Gate" red.

    PORTLAND -- Far from the spot where the deck hits the street, a bridge's influence reaches into a community. Far from the shadows cast by the beams and towers, a bridge shapes the way in which development rises on the landscape.
