High-tech medicine, spiritual space

  • A cancer diagnosis is threatening and the treatment is intimidating, but architecture can make the entire experience different, from the front door to waiting areas to the table itself.

    Radiation technology requires a thick concrete enclosure. At the Evergreen radiation center, Mahlum Architects gave the facility copper cladding, and designed it to be a sculptural element of the campus. The addition is the first phase of a master plan to create a new, state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility.
    Cancer patients have a lot to think about. And during the time they spend in the clinic waiting or lying on a table, the nature of the setting has a lot to do with their state of mind.

    That’s what the leaders of the new radiation oncology center at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center believe. While planning for the center, which opened a year ago, a sample group was asked what they disliked most about the treatment routine.
