When Bellingham software manufacturer DIS Corp. sought to relocate its corporate headquarters, it wanted to rehabilitate one of the city's older downtown office buildings instead of constructing a new facility outside of town.

The company selected the old Montgomery Ward department store, a three-story, 24,785-square-foot building built in 1930. Its architect, F. Stanley Piper, designed other significant downtown buildings now on the historic register such as the Herald Building and the former Bellingham National Bank.
