Bastyr University's student housing in Kenmore is certified LEED for homes platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council.
The $16.5 million project created 11 free-standing cottages for 132 students. The village is tailored for older, independent students. Each unit houses 12 students, with a separate bedroom and bath. The cottages have a communal living area with a living room/kitchen great room, a separate dining area that can also be used for quiet study, and laundry facilities.
Cottages are centered around an outdoor courtyard and connected by walkways to encourage interaction among students. Unnecessary space such as corridors, multiple stairwells and elevators was eliminated to save energy.
Rainwater from the cottages' "butterfly roofs" drains into a reservoir beneath a nearby parking lot. The roofs were design to support vegetation in the future.
Other green features include radiant floor heating, ultra-high efficiency gas boilers and water heaters, heat-recovery natural ventilation and high efficiency lighting systems with daylight controls. Low-flow plumbing fixtures and Energy Star-rated appliances and light fixtures are used throughout.
