Monroe Elementary School

The $16 million Monroe Elementary School opened in January at 10901 27th Ave S.E. in Everett.

The two-story, 68,000-square-foot building replaces an eight-building campus.

The school has flexible spaces for learning, community use and technology. Open instruction areas expand students' access to views and light. Exposed ventilation systems save construction costs and offer lessons in engineering, math, science and physics.

School officials said they think this is the first U.S. public school to be almost entirely lit using a light emitting diode (LED) system. The system was used to save money and energy. Each panel is estimated to last 15 years.
