Western Washington University’s Interdisciplinary Science Building is adjacent to the Biology Building on its Bellingham campus.

The 55,000-square-foot building is four stories plus a mechanical penthouse. Construction budget was $51 million.

It is a campus gateway with active learning classrooms and essential teaching labs for biology, chemistry, biochemistry and ecology. There are lab support spaces and a skybridge on the fourth floor connecting to the Biology Building.

The building is pursuing LEED Gold by targeting sustainable approaches and diverting 85% of construction waste from landfills.

Owner: Western Washington University

Architect: Perkins&Will

General contractor: BNBuilders

Team members: VECA Electric & Technologies and McKinstry
