Edmonds Library, at 650 Main St., reopened to the public in January following an extensive renovation and modernization project precipitated by a major flooding event.
The upgraded library has a completely new aesthetic, plus all new furniture and carpets and new lower-height shelving.
A flexible community room, used for meetings, events and gatherings, was added as part of the upgrade. It was created via a glass Nanowall that can be folded away to open the room to the rest of the library.
A highlight of the library is the children’s area which was transformed from a space narrowly focused on reading into one that encourages multi-sensory learning. It has kid-sized book shelves and seating, plus an interactive peg board wall installation that combines digital and analog elements.
The floor-to-ceiling pegboard is essentially a large version of a Lite-Brite toy and encourages cooperative play and problem-solving via shifting lights and the addition and removal of pegs.
Other unique elements in the children’s area include a sculptural enclosed seating space called The Pebble and a cuddle nook. There are also spaces for co-operative play and learning.
