Builders, owners find going green pays off

This Puget Consumers’ Co-op (PCC) store, which opened November 1999 in Issaquah, was built using sustainable construction techniques. Green builders choose materials and methods that preserve resources, minimize energy demands and protect human health.

For years, much of the U.S. construction industry considered “green” building just a fringe movement. Sure, a few companies fretted about whether their lumber came from old-growth forests or whether their paint might pollute the air. But most contractors focused on more immediate issues, like getting lumber for the best price or putting in flooring that would help sell a building.
