Bullitt starts ‘living building'

Site work has begun for the Bullitt Foundation's Cascadia Center, the first commercial “living building” in Seattle.

The six-story, 52,000-square-foot space will be the nonprofit's headquarters. The site is at 1501 E. Madison St. on Capitol Hill.

Living buildings must generate all the energy they need through renewable sources, and provide and treat all the water they use.

Construction should be complete by the fall of 2012. The team is doing utility work and excavation. The groundbreaking ceremony is set for Aug. 29.

A 230,000-kilowatt solar array on the roof is intended to provide all the building's electricity. Heat will come from a geothermal system. Energy will be fed into the grid during the summer and drawn from the grid during darker months, resulting in what is known as net-zero energy use.

Point32 is Bullitt's development partner, Miller Hull Partnership is the architect and Schuchart is general contractor.
